Staying Cool with a Chronic Condition

As temperatures rise and we prepare for hot days at the beach or plan outdoor events, it is important that we don’t overlook the impact of extreme heat on those of us with chronic conditions. It’s not simply about the discomfort of breaking a sweat or the hassle of wearing sunscreen. In fact, spending time in these conditions could worsen symptoms, trigger a flare, and cause severe dehydration. Hot weather can also cause changes in barometric pressure, thus increasing the pressure on joints, tissues, and other body systems. This is why it’s incredibly important for those of us with a chronic condition to find creative ways to still enjoy the sunnier months while prioritizing our health.

  1. Be prepared. Make sure you are aware of the forecasted temperature and humidity for the day so that you can prepare accordingly. Although weather changes occur all the time, this forecast will give you a general idea of what to expect and can help you adapt your plans to your needs. When possible, try to avoid being outside for extended periods of time or schedule things for mornings and evenings when it may be cooler. 

  2. Dress for the weather. It is also crucial that you wear clothing that will keep you cool and comfortable. Try to avoid tight clothing that might make you even warmer and wear cotton to keep cool. 

  3. Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is crucial to preventing dehydration and improving circulation in the summertime. Try to drink water before you go out and carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. Make sure not to wait until you’re thirsty to drink something because that may mean that you are already dehydrated.

  4. Find shade. If you are going to be outside for extended periods of time, it is crucial that you find a spot in the shade. If this isn’t possible, try to pack a visor or hat with you and avoid being in direct sunlight as much as you can. 

  5. Cool down. Whether you choose to take a dip in the pool, carry around a fan or spray bottle, or indulge in a cold smoothie, it’s important that you find ways to cool down as much as possible. Doing this will bring your body temperature down a bit and can prevent flare ups and other side effects that may occur from being in the heat. 

Having a chronic condition should not prevent you from enjoying the summer months and spending time with those you love but it is important that you take certain precautions to make sure you’re taking care of your body.
